Tōtara Point, Hokianga

Totara Point, located in the Hokianga region of Northland, is a site of deep historical and spiritual significance as the place where Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pompallier celebrated the first Catholic Mass on New Zealand soil on 13 January 1838. This moment marked the beginning of the Catholic Church’s presence in Aotearoa. Today, Totara Point remains a place of reflection, and reverence. Ongoing revitalisation efforts aim to honour its sacred past while creating a welcoming space for future generations to connect with the country’s early missionary history and the enduring legacy of faith.
