Between the seats sits a circular portal. Take one seat and the person opposite is framed by the stone, with the lake and the mountains behind them. Paererewā's operations manager Ryan Reynolds sent a cold email to London studio Nebbia, asking if they'd be keen to design a sculptural seat for a project that had not yet built a single thing. They were curious enough to say yes, and a conversation between two hemispheres was started.",{"type":84,"children":102},[103],{"type":87,"value":104},"The design was aspirational: an enormous boulder, almost a monument, of more than 35 tonnes. \"It's just not possible to extract a stone that big, or if you do, to move it anywhere,\" Ryan explains.",{"type":84,"children":106},[107],{"type":87,"value":108},"So the search for stones began. Only about 1% of New Zealand's total quarried stone is left as large, uncrushed rock. Most rock in this country (around 60%) is crushed for use in roading; about 30% is used in construction, mostly in concrete; and most of the rest is used for fill. One exception is the Timaru Bluestone quarry, which doesn't blast but pulls large stones out, up to seven tonnes at a time. It is impossible to measure a stone in three dimensions, so Ryan travelled around quarries taking photos and videos of rocks with his water bottle on top for scale. It took more than 100 hours of continuous cutting, working through the night. Inside the finished work are eight cores drilled to the ground, with steel through the middle, held in place with 450 litres of grout. Drawn as one 35-tonne monument. Built as five stones.
